Winter is on its way! Snowman and snowflake cookies are a favorite of the season, and in this video I show you how to get creative with your cookie press to make beautiful, whimsical cookies that shimmer like snow.
Here’s the cookie dough recipe and some photos of the pressed cookies and baked results.
Powdered Sugar Butter Spritz
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened (not melted) I always suggest using Land O Lakes butter, as I know it will consistently cream well. Some generic butters result in a very stiff dough!
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups plus 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Combine the flour, salt, and baking soda and set aside. Cream the butter very well with an electric mixer on its highest setting. Then add the powdered sugar and cream again until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly. Add the flour mixture and mix until all ingredients are evenly combined , but do not over-mix as that can make spritz dough too stiff.
Press with disks of your choice using a cookie press onto un-greased cookie sheets.
(*NOTE: As of our 2019 Re-Opening our new disks are made of a solid white material, but the designs are exactly the same, and press identically.)
Bake in a 400 degree oven for 6 to 10 minutes. Check early and often as spritz cookies brown quickly. Let sit 2 or 3 minutes and move to cooking rack. Makes about 70 cookies.
Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar and 3 tablespoons water
Dip cookies- pattern-side-down in the glaze. Allow to drain on cooling rack. Poke a hole in the snowflake centers to help drain the thick glaze so the pattern will show well. While partially wet (for blue) or just slightly set (for white) use a decorating brush to apply shimmering dust by tapping the brush above the cookie and letting the dust fall upon it.
For the snowflakes, add sugar pearls in the centers to finish.
For the snowmen, use icing to add eyes, buttons, and scarf. Use orange jimmies-type sprinkles for noses.
Several brands make shimmer dust, this time I used Wilton® Pearl Dust™ in sapphire blue and white, their decorating icing in royal blue and black, and their white sugar pearls. Find with cake decorating supplies at Wal Mart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc, or online.
